PLANTS INTELLIGENCE

RIXC Art Science Festival 2025

Zane Zelmene. Ziedonis

16.10.2025.

Ziedonis is an augmented reality installation inspired by the paradoxical nature of the giant hogweed — a plant once introduced to Latvia during the Soviet era as a useful crop for cattle feed and bee forage, which later became a toxic invader. Its photosensitive sap burns human skin when exposed to sunlight, revealing the fine line between cultivation and destruction. In Ziedonis, virtual hogweeds emerge and spread like radiant intruders, reflecting on humanity’s attempts to control nature and the unforeseen consequences of those interventions.
